How a broken thermostat affects your car
The thermostat is located in the outlet pipe of the engine cylinder head and ensures proper engine operation (temperature) by automatically regulating the circulation of cooling water. In addition, there is a heat core in the middle below the thermostat, which begins to expand when the temperature of the internal circulation reaches a critical value, separating the inner and outer rims of the thermostat disc, thus realizing the purpose of cooling down the interior of the engine. The automobile thermostat is an automatic temperature regulating device including a temperature sensing component, which controls the degree of opening and closing of the main and auxiliary valves according to the temperature of the coolant in order to regulate the amount of water entering the radiator and to ensure the heat dissipation capacity of the cooling system. When the engine temperature has not yet reached the desired state, the thermostat's secondary valve opens and the main valve closes, at which time the coolant only carries out a small circulation between the water jacket and the water pump. Once the engine water temperature rises to more than 80 degrees Celsius, the main valve of the thermostat will automatically open, so that the cooling water out of the water jacket through the radiator to dissipate heat and then flow through the water pump again to send back to the water jacket (large cycle). This improves the cooling efficiency of the radiator system and effectively avoids engine overheating.
A faulty thermostat can lead to a variety of symptoms, the most obvious of which is engine overheating. Failure to properly cool the engine while driving will result in overheating, which in turn will affect the performance and longevity of the engine. Additionally, a malfunctioning thermostat can lead to a weak car ride. When the engine is unable to be properly cooled, it will operate less efficiently, resulting in an underpowered car. The effects of a malfunctioning thermostat on car driving are obvious. First of all, engine overheating reduces the performance of the engine and prevents it from running at its optimum. This not only affects the car's driving performance, but also increases fuel consumption. This is because the engine
overheats, the car needs to increase its fuel supply in order to keep it running properly, resulting in increased fuel consumption. In addition, a malfunctioning thermostat can shorten the life of the engine. If the engine is overheated for a long period of time, it will cause damage to its internal parts, leading to an increase in repair costs.
Symptoms and manifestations of thermostat damage
Thermostat is to control the engine cooling system "big cycle" and "small cycle" of the important parts, once damaged either lead to engine water temperature can not reach the standard working conditions. Either will lead to high water temperature, we can judge the thermostat through the following ways there is no failure.
1, the thermostat damage will lead to the water temperature light alarm on the meter, showing that the water temperature is too high.
2, the water tank up and down the water pipe with the hand feel the temperature is obviously different, the upper water pipe temperature is very high, the lower water pipe temperature is very low.
3, the electronic fan to high-speed gear has been working, because the water temperature is too high, the body computer control electronic fan rapid cooling, so the electronic fan will always turn.
4, the instrument lights up the engine malfunction light, the decoder reads the malfunction information as vehicle temperature sensor failure, generally, the temperature sensor and thermostat are designed together, when the thermostat malfunctions, it will report the temperature sensor malfunction, this kind of problem is very common in the Buick Insignia and Chevrolet such as this model.
Solution:
1, after replacing the thermostat test with the car, pay attention to some vehicles must exhaust air, otherwise even if the replacement of the thermostat water temperature will remain high, some models such as pickup trucks, heat dissipation is not good, you can add an electronic fan in the front or directly remove the thermostat, in the summer there will not be a phenomenon of high temperature.
2, for some models such as Junwei, if the thermostat failure after the replacement of a good, the air is exhausted, but the water temperature is still high, the electronic fan with the car on the turn, this time only need to clear the fault code restart can solve the problem.
3, after the replacement, be sure to use the decoder to read the water temperature, the general vehicle in 93 degrees after the electronic fan must work, and the U.S. car is more strange, the temperature is set too high, 98-108 degrees electronic fan work, so the U.S. car is always a high temperature phenomenon, the electronic fan work too late.
4, in general, to determine whether the thermostat failure is the most intuitive method is to be removed and placed in the water to cook, if the water is open after the thermostat valve is open to prove normal, and vice versa is bad.
