Step-by-step guide on how to change an engine oil filter

Changing an engine oil filter is a fundamental part of regular vehicle maintenance, typically performed during an oil change. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

**Step 1: Gather Materials**

- New engine oil (the correct type and amount for your vehicle)

- New oil filter that matches your car's specifications

- Drain pan for old oil

- Filter wrench or pliers (if needed)

- Clean rags or paper towels

- Funnel (optional)

 **Step 2: Prepare the Vehicle**

- Park your car on level ground and let the engine cool down so you don't burn yourself.

- Place the drain pan under the oil filter and the oil drain plug.

 **Step 3: Drain Old Oil**

- Locate the oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan and remove it using a wrench.

- Let the old oil drain completely into the pan. This could take several minutes.

**Step 4: Remove the Old Oil Filter**

- Locate the oil filter which is usually found near the oil pan or on the side of the engine block.

- Use an oil filter wrench or pliers to loosen and remove the old filter. Be careful as some oil may still be inside.

- Allow any remaining oil in the filter to drain into the pan.

**Step 5: Install the New Oil Filter**

- Take the new oil filter and lubricate its rubber seal with a little bit of fresh engine oil. This ensures a better seal and easier removal later.

- Screw the new filter onto the engine by hand, turning it clockwise until snug. Do not over-tighten, as this can cause damage to the filter or housing.

**Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug**

- Clean the drain plug area if necessary and reinstall the plug. Tighten it to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.

**Step 7: Refill With New Oil**

- Using a funnel (if needed), add new engine oil through the oil cap opening in the valve cover, filling it to the recommended level marked on the dipstick.

- Check the oil level after adding the oil, and top off if necessary.

 **Step 8: Check for Leaks**

- Before starting the engine, inspect the oil filter and drain plug for leaks.

- Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then turn it off and check the oil level again.

 **Step 9: Proper Disposal**

- Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts them.

Remember to always refer to your vehicle’s owner's manual for specific instructions related to your make and model.
